One of the most common questions pool owners ask us is simple: how long does a pool liner last? While it is tempting to look for a precise number of years, the reality is more nuanced. A pool liner does not age according to a fixed timeline — it ages according to how it is used, maintained, and exposed to its environment.
From our experience, understanding how a liner ages is far more useful than focusing on when it was installed.

1. Average Lifespan: A Useful Reference, Not a Guarantee
Under normal conditions, a quality pool liner typically lasts between 10 and 15 years. This timeframe is widely accepted in the industry and gives owners a useful point of reference.
That said, our experience in the field tells us that this range should never be seen as a guarantee.
Over the years, we have worked on pools where liners:
showed clear signs of ageing well before the 10-year mark,
and others that remained perfectly functional well beyond 15 years.

along seams,
near fittings and skimmers.

Daily use also contributes to wear. Pool robots, manual cleaning tools and frequent water level adjustments all have a cumulative impact.

Consistent water balance, measured use of treatments and regular monitoring help preserve flexibility and surface integrity. On the other hand, repeated corrective treatments or chemical shocks can noticeably shorten a liner’s lifespan.

6. Liner Quality and New Materials: Why Caution Matters
Beyond age and maintenance, liner quality plays a critical role in durability.
Lower-quality liners tend to age faster, regardless of care. Thinner PVC, limited UV protection and less stable formulations often result in:
premature loss of elasticity,
faster discolouration,

In recent years, we have also seen the arrival of new liner materials and finishes presented as innovative solutions. While some offer attractive aesthetics or new textures, their long-term durability is not always fully proven yet.
This does not mean innovation is inherently problematic. However, when a material has not yet been tested over 10 to 15 years in real conditions, there is naturally less feedback on how it will age.
